How to help

“If you think you’re too small to make a difference, try going to bed with a mosquito.” – Dalai Lama

No matter who you are, you can help us. It’s easier than you think. listWith a HUGE FAW paws thanks from the animals of Fisantekraal.

We need volunteers on Saturday and Tuesday mornings! We’re also struggling to keep our heads above water financially – with the economic slump, fewer donations than ever are coming in; and with monthly vet bills averaging out at around R12,000 to R15,000, the situation is becoming dire.

Please bear in mind that we’re a charity staffed entirely by volunteers (most of whom work full-time and have families too), with 2 old Chana bakkies (usually used for transporting animals) so we can’t always collect things quickly or respond to emails or Facebook posts immediately – although we try our best to keep up! :-)

VOLUNTEERING in Fisantekraal Saturdays and Tuesdays 09h00 – 12h00

pack and sell food, transport sick and injured animals to local vets and AACL, bath and dip dogs, help at the informal shop, do home checks (feed hungry animals, check on animals needing kennels, follow-ups on recovering animals, provide runners for dogs on short chains), take details for sterilisations, etc.
We also need a trained ‘clipper’ to deal with the many woolly, tangled maltese poodles and other long-haired dogs (clippers provided). Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays
we need people to collect and deliver animals from Morning Star and Fisantekraal to and from local vets for sterilisations. Would suit someone not working or with flexible hours.

DOG & CAT FOOD – Dry and canned food please.

COLLARS (not choke chains, please) & leads

ITEMS FOR OUR INFORMAL SHOP: ANY useable second-hand goods (including clothes, household items, electrical goods, toys, books, computer games, etc.). These are sold to the residents of Fisantekraal at a nominal fee, which helps them, and EVERY PENNY goes to help the animals. For more details, contact Anita on 021 979 5712.

  • Clothing: Especially children’s clothing, shoes, tog bags, etc.
  • Toys: Balls, dolls, ‘computer’ games, plush toys, etc.
  • Household goods: Pots, pans, cutlery, crockery, beds, lounge furniture, bric-a-brac, etc.
  • Electrical goods: Hairdryers, curling/straightening irons, toasters, kettles, sandwich makers, washing machines, fridges, TVs, etc.
  • Soft furnishings: Bath mats, curtains, bed linen, etc.
  • Pet items: especially collars and leads

This is just a guideline – ANYTHING sells!

(Unfortunately, we aren’t able to take items beyond repair. Everything else we say a resounding ‘YES’ to!)

USE YOUR TALENTS – everyone has talents and connections, and, no matter what yours are, you can help us!

  • Are you good at organising events, coming up with fab fundraising ideas, or have lots of contacts? You could help us with fundraisers like concerts, teas, etc. For example, the kind owners of Psytopia, a newly-opened club in Durbanville, donate some of their profits to us.
  • Have a bit of spare time on your hands? You could help by organising and collecting collection tins and pet food donation trolleys (local supermarkets and vet shops).
  • We auction items via ‘Auctions for Charity‘ on Facebook – perhaps you have something great that can bring in funds (for example, we recently auctioned an aromatherapy hamper for R700)
  • Good at DIY? You could help build kennels or getting our containers organised; or even make sturdy collars. If you have old or new kennels you’d like to donate, or are handy with a hammer, let us know – we have a kennel project on the go.

FOSTERING: Sometimes an animal needs a temporary place to stay. Yes, it can be hard to have to give the animal up at the end of its stay, but fostering is so rewarding – that animal would have been in a shelter instead.

  • recovering from surgery or illness before returning home
  • baby animals needing frequent feeding and more attention than overworked shelters can provide
  • nervous or timid animals or those which may have been
  • animals requiring increased feeding due to starvation or neglect
  • young animals needing exercise and training
  • no space in shelters
  • animals needing to get trained and forever family ready.

We have specifications for fostering for the animals’ wellbeing, but a foster family doesn’t need to be home all day (although it’s preferable if you work part-time, or (ideal), are home all day). Potential foster families can specify age, size, and sex of animals, and the maximum number they are able to take. You need to be in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town. If you have children or pets this doesn’t exclude you from fostering. The animal needs to be in a secure, fenced-in area with proper shelter, food and water, and may not be chained/tied at all. If needed, FAW can provide subsidised food, etc. so it needn’t be a costly exercise.

Of course, the number one factor is you have to care for, love, and make the animal a part of your family! Home checks are carried out prior to fostering. Please contact Jane (Contact) for more details.

KENNEL PROJECT– used or new kennels, wooden pallets, nails (clout nails 25mm & 65mm), and strong plastic sheeting for building new kennels
